Iran reports hundreds of deaths amid protests throughout cities
A physician based in Tehran, speaking anonymously according to reports, said that six hospitals in the capital had documented “at least 217 protester deaths, most by live ammunition.” The doctor indicated that many of the victims were brought in with severe gunshot wounds.
In a separate account, reports quoting a hospital worker in Tehran said that "around 38 people" had died, adding that many victims suffered "direct shots to the heads of the young people, to their hearts as well."
Elsewhere, a doctor in the northeastern city of Neyshabur was cited as saying security forces killed "at least 30 people" there on Friday, allegedly using "military rifles."
“Among them were children. A 5-year-old child was shot while in his mother’s arms," a female doctor said, according to reports. She further alleged that numerous people were injured in the attacks and that gunfire also struck bystanders and pedestrians.
Medical sources said hospitals are struggling to cope with the influx of casualties. Patients are described as being "terrified" of seeking formal treatment or having their identities recorded, leading some doctors to attempt treating the wounded discreetly in private clinics.
The reported figures could not be independently confirmed.
Iran has faced sustained unrest since protests first erupted on Dec. 28 at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar, sparked by the sharp fall of the national currency and worsening economic conditions. The demonstrations later spread to multiple cities nationwide.
While authorities have not released official casualty figures, reports citing a non-governmental monitoring group estimated at least 116 deaths and more than 2,600 people detained in connection with the protests.
