Iran Urges UN to Designate Israel, U.S. as Attack “Initiators”

(MENAFN) On Sunday, Iran called on the UN Security Council to officially designate Israel and the United States as the “initiators” of recent assaults against the country.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and reported by a local news agency, stated, “We solemnly request that the Security Council recognize the Israeli regime and the United States as the initiators of the act of aggression and their subsequent responsibility therefor including compensation and reparation.”

“The Security Council should also hold the aggressors accountable and prevent the recurrence of such heinous and serious crimes to enable it to maintain international peace and security,” the letter included.

Araghchi also emphasized, “It should be noted that political and military leaders who order an act of aggression are also individually liable for the international crime of aggression under customary international law.”

The recent conflict, lasting 12 days, ignited on June 13 when Israel launched airstrikes targeting Iranian military, nuclear, and civilian locations, resulting in at least 606 deaths and 5,332 injuries, according to Iran’s Health Ministry.

In a further escalation, the US carried out bombings on three Iranian nuclear sites at Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan.

In response, Tehran launched missile and drone attacks on Israel, which, according to data from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, caused at least 29 fatalities and left over 3,400 wounded.

The hostilities ceased following a US-brokered ceasefire that went into effect on June 24.
