Iran Urges UN to Hold Israel, US Accountable
In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized, “We solemnly request that the Security Council recognize the Israeli regime and the United States as the initiators of the act of aggression and their subsequent responsibility therefor including compensation and reparation,” according to a semi-official news outlet.
The correspondence further urged the Security Council to take measures to hold the "aggressors" accountable, stating it must "prevent the recurrence of such heinous and serious crimes" to fulfill its role in maintaining global peace and stability.
Highlighting the legal implications, the letter noted, “It should be noted that political and military leaders who order an act of aggression are also individually liable for the international crime of aggression under customary international law.”
The confrontation, which spanned 12 days, began on June 13 when Israeli forces executed air assaults on a range of Iranian targets — including military, nuclear, and civilian infrastructure — resulting in at least 606 fatalities and 5,332 injuries, as reported by Iran’s Health Ministry.
Amid escalating tensions, the United States also carried out air raids on three Iranian nuclear facilities located in Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan.
In retaliation, Tehran launched a barrage of missiles and drones toward Israel.
According to statistics from Hebrew University of Jerusalem, these counterattacks led to at least 29 deaths and over 3,400 injuries.
